About the Artist

Carol has loved dogs, horses and cats all her life, and has loved working with fiber almost that long. She is largely self-taught, though did take art in high school as well as a few art classes here and there over the years. She first tried quilting in the late 70s but found the available fabrics (flowered cottons and polyester solids) unsatisfying to work with. She went on to other fiber interests, returning to quilting only after a coworker talked her into taking a beginning quilting class in 2008. The array of cotton fabrics and the variety of ways quilters were using them fascinated her. She went on to make traditional quilts mostly for family and friends.
A coworker had a rescued greyhound she adored and whom she loved talking about. Carol asked permission to use the photo the coworker kept at her desk to make a portrait after reading the technique portion of Charlotte Warr Andersen’s book Focus on Features. This was her first attempt at using a photo to create an applique art quilt. When she finished the portrait, she took it to work and showed it to her coworker. The coworker said: “That’s Truman.” and teared up. Carol had found her passion.

“There is nothing more satisfying in designing and creating a portrait than seeing the animal come to life in fabric. There is a point in the construction of the quilt when the portrait takes on a life of its own, and spirit of the animal comes to life. That is the most satisfying moment of all in creating these quilts.”
