Rescue dogs hold a special place in our hearts.DSCN0212

This is Mica, a rescue from Taiwan.  She belongs to my web designer and I was lucky enough to get a good photo of her at one of my appointments. Bringing a black dog to life in fabric intrigued me and this is the result.  This appliqué portrait was created using commercial cotton fabric, tulle, cotton and polyester threads, and silver colored embellishments.

She was rescued through Tiramisu Dog Rescue out of San Francisco.

Wolfling Transformed

Wolfling
Dogs have long been human companions bred to create canines much different than the wolf ancestors of thousands of years ago.  And yet, we get glimpses now and again of their wild heritage.  The trappings of domestication fade as they chase a rabbit or shred a stuffed toy and, just for a moment, we can hear echoes of their ancestor’s haunting call before the pets we know and love are themselves again.
This portrait is of Monique, my younger standard poodle.  She had little human contact the first few months of her life and it took her a long time to learn to enjoy and seek human affection and contact.

Resting Under the Weeping Willow Tree

Eddie

Applique portrait of a cat designed from a photograph. Hand dyed gradient fabric pieced in Ricky Tims’ harmonic convergence style to give a sense of filtered light. Quilted in a weeping willow branches/leaves pattern. Embellished with a silk scarf. Juried in to the wall quilt category at Pacific International Quilt Festival, 2013.

BoeBoe

BoeBoe

This appliqued dog portrait includes a bit of thread painting where the fabric did not quite do the job with details.  Most important to the owner was including this dog’s smile. I quilted free-style hearts in the background fabric.

Best Buddies

Best Buddies

This applique quilt presented major challenges in getting the right fabric to reflect the coloration of the dogs. The blacker dog had brown highlights, and The brindle’s coloration just didn’t match any fabrics I found in terms of color and texture until a lucky find in batiks at a quilt store brought the design together.

Gertie

Gertie

This applique portrait of Gertie was based on her owner’s favorite photo – this dog looking up at the camera from below with her nose the most prominent feature. The owner later told me that Gertie had a Scooby-Doo aspect that I caught in this quilt.

Remi

Remi
This is an appliqued portrait of Remi, a special-needs greyhound rescued after a racing injury. This piece was commissioned as a gift for his foster mom of 2+ years. Wine Country Greyhounds wanted to give her something special to commemorate her loving care when he was adopted.

Bella

Bella

A former coworker provided the photograph for this quilt showing her 3 month old puppy coming to their home for the first time. The big eyes really grabbed me, so I was delighted when she gave permission for me to make an art quilt from the photo.

Spook

Spook

Creating a black dog with fabric presented some challenges in bringing depth and contrast to the image. The design was based on the dog’s owner’s favorite photo which was blurry, and 2 other photos with clear images of this dog’s coloring.

Etude de Chat en Violet (Study of a Cat in Purple)

Etude de Chat en Violet (Study of a Cat in Purple)

This Himalayan cat with his intent, focused gaze intrigued me. I felt that violet/purple set him off perfectly. I used green silk for the eyes, a perfect match to the color in the photograph. I machine stitched free-form hearts all around him since he is a beloved member of his family.
