The quilts are constructed primarily from commercial cotton fabrics using a raw edge applique technique and fusible thread to help the pieces adhere to each other. This assures that the fabric remains light and flexible. Carol enjoys the challenge of finding a commercial fabric that brings out the detail of the subject of the portrait. Other fabrics such as silk, tulle, and organza are used to create certain effects, After the image of the animal is assembled, all raw edges are satin stitched. The background is selected to enhance the image of the animal. Yarn or thread painting may be added to enhance the portrait, usually after it is quilted.
